For law firms and attorneys

Your assistant posts the win. You hold the bar card.

A settlement figure in a reel, “best lawyer in town” on a banner, a case result posted with no attorney named — those are advertisements against your bar licence, not your assistant’s. We read every piece before it goes out.

What this rule set holds

28 phrases, and the attorney your bar rules require you to name.

Two traps, and they are the two things a firm most wants to say. Outcome language, which Model Rule 7.1 reads as a promise, and superlatives like “best lawyer” or “#1 attorney” that cannot be substantiated. Most of what the gate does here is catch a sentence written in good faith.

What it catches

  • Outcome language: guarantee, guaranteed settlement, we will win, never lost a case
  • Superlatives the Model Rules will not accept: best lawyer, top attorney, #1 law firm
  • No attorney or firm named as responsible for the advertisement
  • Past results and settlement figures given without the disclaimer that makes them lawful

Why it matters per piece

The bar card is in your name. Whoever typed the post, the grievance arrives at the admitted attorney. A dated record of what was screened is the difference between a conversation and a problem.

A screening tool, not legal advice. Your compliance officer or counsel has the last word.
